Capital of Aragon

Zaragoza is the capital of Aragon, one of the autonomous regions of northeastern Spain. In the centre of the city stands the baroque basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pilar, facing the river Ebro. It is a popular pilgrimage site with several domes and a tabernacle dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The city has emblematic monuments in the Mudejar style (where Islamic and Gothic architecture merge) such as the Aljafería, an 11th century Moorish palace, and the cathedral of El Salvador in its Epiphany, which was begun in the 12th century..
